Bat and Ball Junior Cricket Club... bringing the world’s 2nd most popular sport to kids in Budapest
Bat and Ball Junior Cricket Club, Budapest’s first junior
cricket club, started on 8th May 2010, offering one session per week alongside
‘Buda Juniors International Football Club’. Ever since, the club has expanded
rapidly, now offering 5 junior cricket sessions per week at 3 different
schools, including Saturday trainings that are attended by children from many different schools, both 'international' and Hungarian. With close to 70 children aged 6-15yrs already training weekly, the sport of Cricket is set to take Budapest's international kids by storm!
Bat and Ball Founder and Head Coach, Andrew Leckonby
Andrew is well known to AISB children having been a substitute teacher here since 2011, and is now a regular member of staff as the AISB Early Childhood PE teacher. Andrew was one of the founders of the Hungarian Cricket Association (www.hungary4cricket.com) and remained on the Executive Board of the HCA, as the 'Cricket Development Director', from its inception in 2007 until November 2013. He was also the Hungarian National Cricket Team Captain from 2009-2013, leading the team to some important European cricket victories. Andrew has now withdrawn from both of these national cricket roles in order to commit more time to coaching the growing numbers of junior cricketers in Hungary.
Bat and Ball Senior Coach, Duncan Shoebridge
Duncan Shoebridge joined the Bat and Ball coaching team in 2012 and has been an instant and massive success with the club. Duncan played 'Premier League' cricket in Sussex for 17 years, frequently as Captain of East Grinstead CC. His contacts in Sussex lead Duncan to the inspirational idea of taking a Bat and Ball team there to compete against English junior teams; that successful tour took place in July 2013 and will become an annual event for the club. Duncan is also the Hungarian National Cricket Team Coach and has significantly improved playing standards at that level too!
OK, but WHAT IS CRICKET???
Cricket is the 2nd most popular sport in the world - 2nd only to football (i.e. soccer) - and is played by boys and girls, women and men, all across the world. It is a non-contact striking and fielding game played between two opposing teams, generally played outside but can also be played indoors, with modified rules. Cricket is played by boys, girls, women and men all across the world. It requires players to 'bowl' (a special kind of overarm 'throw' used to start each piece of action in cricket), to hit, to run, to catch, to throw, and much, much more! A highly strategic and tactical game, cricket appeals to children and adults alike not just because of the physical actions requiring strength, speed, co-ordination and skill, but also because of the mental actions requiring planning, judgement, and quick, on-the-spot decision making. Cricket brings out individual skill, the ability to work in pairs (e.g. with a batting partner), and of course is ultimately a TEAM sport depending on all players working together to overcome the opposition. Each team gets their chance to score as many 'runs' (points) as possible; the team with the highest number of runs wins. See the video below for just one example of cricket being played by AISB kids.
BEGINNERS ARE WELCOME, and cricket is equally fantastic for girls as well as boys.
